Meet Carlos

I remember growing up here in Aurora and I am amazed at how much it has grown.  We are one of the largest and most diverse communities in Colorado.  I fondly recall going to the Cherry Creek Reservoir in the summers and high school football games.  I remember going to school and thinking how I could not wait to get out of school and start my “real life."  Now that I have matured and I look back at those good times, I realize that it could be even better for the next generation.  We can have stronger schools, higher test scores, increase the number of kids going on to college and further develop a fun and creative learning environment.  We need to make changes to ensure this happens!

I have always believed that education was very important for everyone, and that we all deserve the best education possible.  My parents instilled a love of learning and giving to others from an early age.  In my early 20’s, I worked with at-risk students in the greater Five Points area as a youth worker.  I have always had a passion to help young people succeed in life.

I spent my early 20's as a youth worker in Five Points, Denver.  I worked with kids, helping them understand their potential in life.

I remember one time I asked one of the boys in my youth group where he was going to go to college.  He looked at me confused.  He said he believed college was never an option for him!  He had no role model, his parents were not together and his mother had to work two jobs just to put food on the table. No one in his family went on to college and he felt that he would just fall into the same trap.  I took it on as a personal challenge to show him a different path that life is wide open for him and there for the taking if that is what he wanted and was willing to work toward.

I want to continue showing students of all ages from all backgrounds that no matter what their dreams are they are within their reach!  I intend to to make the most of this School Board position to help strengthen programs in APS such as mentorships to show our kids that they have diverse options and that higher education is not only one of those options, but a realistic goal.

Because of the people in my life who believed in me, I finished my master’s degree by the time I was 23.  Out of my Great Grandmother’s 16 children, my grandmother’s 9 children, and my 25 cousins, my mother and I were the first to ever complete secondary education in the family.

The children in our public schools need to know that our school district, our communities and our families believe in them.  The APS Vision is to “Graduate every student with a choice to attend college without remediation.”  I’m going to help make that vision a reality.  When you vote for me you are also voting to help kids that may not have believed that higher education was within their reach, you are voting to help them.

By making our schools better you can help children in our community begin their lives with the best education, as the novelist and poet Kahlil Gibran said “You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.”
